Coast to Coast 2010

20th May 10, 8:30pm

About the Coast to Coast challenge:

On Thursday 20th May 2010 myself and Jim will be undertaking the popular coast to coast sea to sea challenge which begins in the small harbour town of Workington situated at the far North West of the United Kingdom just 35 miles south west from the Scottish border.

We have scheduled a itinerary to do the route in 2 and a half days with the first day crossing the steep climbs of the Peninnes and all that the Lake District has to offer finishing for the day in the town of Penrith.

Day 2 will see us cycling from Penrith to Stanhope, and the final day will be a short half day cycle through Newcastle to the watefront of Tynemouth.

The route will entail 230km of cycling and providing the weather is good it is bound to offer some spectacular sights of all that northern England has to offer.

About the Coast to Coast route:

The Coast to Coast or the C2C as it is more commonly known is the UK’s most popular long distance cycle route.

At 230km in length the route begins on the west coast of Cumbria at either Whitehaven or Workington and finishes on the north east coast at Sunderland or Tynemouth / Newcastle.

This is truely a Coast to Coast route as you depart from the Irish Sea on the West Coast of the United Kindtom to the North Sea on the far East of the Country.

The route starts in the former Industrial areas of West Cumbria, travelling through the stunning scenery of the northern Lake District before heading through the Eden valley and onto the northern Pennines (the roof of England).

The route continues through several old lead mining villages and down into the Durham dales before heading towards the finishing line in the old industrial heartlands of the north east and journeys end at either Newcastle or Sunderland.

The route contains some challenging terrain mostly through the Pennines providing some hard climbs (the highest point being over 4,000 feet)

Tradition dictates that you start the ride by dipping your back wheel in the Irish Sea and only finish when your front wheel gets a dip in the North Sea at the other end.

Route summary:

Total distance: 170 Miles (273KM)
Total days 2.5 days
Direction of travel: West to East coast to take advantage of the prevailing winds over the Pennines.
