Today saw the undertaking of the first annual London to Hastings cycle,I was sporting a stinking cold over the weekend which made it hard just to get out of bed on Sunday morning at 5.30am but you gotta do what you\'ve gotta do.
The original route was a total of 61 miles but a routing error added 10 miles onto the route which under normal circumstances would be nothing to worry about but this was one tough route, there were at least 11 1 in 4 graded climbs, and not the short sharp ones that you can fly up and recover from instantly,im talking long steep climbs of over a mile and 2 miles in places that seemed to wind their way up into the hills forever, tackling the famous \"Ridge\" which to anyone who knows that area will know exactly what the ridge is,but for those who dont its a circle of very steep hills that form a circumference around Hastings and the sussex area making it like a natural fortification meaning that the only way to get to the other side is over it!
It was bottom chainring all the way for most of it sometimes getting to the stage where I had no gears left on the back to drop down onto and just had to grit my teeth and spin at a high cadence to get up them, but I got through it and im glad I went because although I wasnt feeling well the training I recieved from that one day of climbing and long fast descents was more than ive managed to get in doing my hills repeats in the last 4 months and it should prove vital when the Exmoor Beast comes around.
Pics have been uploaded, all thats left to do now is rest, recover & look forward to the easy paced London to Windsor on Sunday.
